雅子さま56歳の誕生日
皇后雅子さまが56歳の誕生日を迎え、皇居で祝賀受ける行事が行われた。宮内庁を通じて公表した文書には、5月の天皇陛下の即位以降、多くの国民から祝意を寄せられたことに「心から感謝しております」とつづった。
赤坂御所では夕食会が行われ、上皇ご夫妻や秋篠宮ご一家が雅子さまの誕生日を祝われた。
宮内庁によると、皇后雅子さまが昨年の誕生日以降、1年間に臨んだ都内の主な訪問は67件。前年は41件だった。医師団は、雅子さまの病状について、依然と変わらず「ご快復の途上」としている。

ニュージーランドで火山噴火
ニュージーランド北部沖の人気観光地ホワイト島（マオリ名：ファカアリ）で火山が噴火。直前に噴火口の内側を歩く観光客の姿が目撃されており、行方不明者2人を含む19人の犠牲者が出た。
ニュージーランド警察は24日、行方不明者の捜索を終了したと発表。1人は17歳のオーストラリア人観光客、もう1人は40歳のニュージーランド人観光ガイドだった。
